Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has just discovered the magic of the popular Nintendo Switch video game Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and she's using the game to visit a handful of constituents' and strangers' islands to leave messages on their bulletin boards.
AOC first tweeted about the game on May 7, writing, "Hi there! Very new to this. I would like to visit random people’s islands and leave a doodle or note on their bulletin board. Can I do that? If so, how? Should I open my DMs for the first time since the Zuckerberg hearing for the Dodo codes??" She then opened said DMs for exactly four minutes, and the help flooded in, giving AOC the warm fuzzies — all of which she documented in a Twitter thread.
"Honestly never in my life did I think opening my DMs would grant me faith in humanity but the brief window actually resulted in a lot of these messages being very wholesome," she wrote. "People are asking for surprise visits to their spouse’s islands!! This is the love everyone deserves."
After asking her followers for "etiquette" advice re: visiting other people's islands, AOC began making her "House" calls, and apparently the first one went very well. "It was so sweet. Island belonged to a family of three. We exchanged fruit, took pictures, and I signed a bulletin note using my touch screen," she tweeted of the experience. "I was floored by how fast they typed and they taught me about the app."
Since her first visit went so well, she's been opening up her DMs for more House calls, and even showed off her avatar, who wears an AOC tee. "Yes that is a hand-drawn campaign shirt & no I haven’t sorted out exporting screenshots yet," she wrote.
Many followers were thrilled that AOC is playing their favorite game — one even invited her to guest on their in-game talk show, which AOC said she thought was "funny and bizarre enough to be compelling to me." However, a few jumped into her mentions to snark on her newfound love for Animal Crossing. "Are you kidding me? We're paying you to play Animal Crossing? OMG," tweeted a former Republican Congressional candidate. AOC was quick to clap back, tweeting, "Curious for your thoughts on Trump’s golf bills."
